Steadfast Support For Those With Quadriplegia

Spotlight Case

26-year-old mechanic working out of town on a project dove into a swimming pool at his hotel striking his head and fracturing his spine. Pool had inadequate NO DIVING warnings. The fractured spine resulted in quadriplegia and the young man is unable to work or care for himself and requires round the clock attendant care.

Result: Case settled prior to trial for $2.5 million plus lifetime benefits from the workers' compensation.

When someone suffers a spinal cord injury resulting in quadriplegia, every aspect of their life is changed from that moment on. Things once taken for granted, such as the ability to earn an income and care for oneself, are suddenly significantly changed.

Following the injury, a quadriplegic will require months of acute and rehabilitative care. They will require adaptations to not only living environments, but for nearly every task they wish to pursue. The costs involved are financially, and emotionally, often overwhelming.

At Gwilliam Ivary Chiosso Cavalli & Brewer, in Oakland, California, we believe when quadriplegia is the direct result of another's negligence, the at-fault party needs to be held accountable for the effects on a victim's life. For more than 40 years, our personal injury attorneys have strived to help victims of quadriplegia and their families secure the funding for a lifetime of need. We serve clients across the greater Bay Area and northern California.

What Is Quadriplegia?

Quadriplegia is a paralyzing condition that occurs when there is injury to one of the cervical vertebrae located in the neck. Complications vary depending on the exact location of the injury, but symptoms often include:

  • Loss of feeling and function in arms and legs
  • Impairment of chest and abdominal muscles
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Loss of bladder and bowel control
  • Spasms
  • Changes in sexual function
  • Shortened life span

Although there is currently no cure for quadriplegia, through rehabilitative therapies and the use of adaptive equipment, many quadriplegics lead a very full and active life.

Exploring The Legal Component

Putting a price on the loss of mobility is very difficult. By relying on a roster of life care planners, medical professionals and accident reconstructionists, we work to determine the financial compensation necessary for a quadriplegic to live a life of dignity.

While we encourage settlement outside the courts, we do not hesitate to represent the interests of victims of car, bicycle, pedestrian, or construction accident victims in front of a judge and jury. Our goal is to achieve the best possible outcome in every serious injury case.
